Special Places: Memories of a place in nature.

Do you have a special memory of yourself in nature? Did you have a place that you went to get away or play? Did you climb a tree, play in a stream, dig/plant a garden, make fairy houses or forts? Don’t have memories in nature? Get out and make some!

Sit outside and observe with all of your senses. What do you see, hear, feel, smell, (don’t taste!)? Squint your eyes. What do you see? Include the largest things you see (trees, shrubs, hills, mountains). Then take a closer look and include the smallest things you can find (seeds, ants, small petals on a flower, a rain drop on a leaf).

Close your eyes – what do you hear, feel and smell? We hear sounds in layers. Listen, do you hear things far away, or close by, or both at the same time? How would you represent that in a visual way? Can you feel the breeze, or the heat, or rain? Can you smell wet dirt, the fragrance of the flowers, or decaying leaves/ wood?

Include wildlife, natural shelters (nest, hives, burrows), mediation/quiet spaces, plants, water source, weather, food for the animals, cycles of life of wildlife, (eggs, fledglings, adults, or eggs, larva, young insect, adult insect or eggs, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly or egg, tadpole, frog. etc.).You can even include yourself!

Cooler weather is finally upon us after a hot hot summer and that means it is time to start your Fall planting of native plants. Click on the link below to check out EcoAddendum’s Fall Native Plant Catalog.

EcoAddendum Fall 2011 Native Plant Catalog

The catalog is filled with color photos and details on each plant including bloom time, location the plant will thrive, how big the plant will get and what pollinator the plant supports.
This season EcoAddendum is proud to be offering 5 Native Plant Combo Packages for Urban Farmers, Bird Watchers, Folks with Sun or Shade Gardens and Pollinator Lovers. It is going to be a great Fall season at EcoAddendum, we hope to see you at one or our Open Houses, Free Talks, Community Plant Sales or Gardening Classes. For more information please visit EcoAddendum.org or email LSandoval@EcoAddendum.org

Why Planting in the Fall is Best for your Native Perennial Plants:

Roots are the vital organ of plant. Planting in the Fall give the roots 5 months to establish themselves with all the energy of the plant going down and not focusing on upward growth and blooms. This means stronger, more sustainable, drought-tolerant plants that require less watering during our punishing Georgia Summer. Stronger plants means more growth, nectar and seeds for native pollinators and wildlife. Happy pollinators turn your back yard into a healthy ecosystem with a higher yielding vegetable garden!
