Mission Accomplished!
The DHHS Native Plant Outdoor Classroom is complete with 2 bird baths, benches that seat over 30 students, NWF School Yard Habitat Certification, 30 different native plant species and 324 native plants and shrubs covering the 1000 square foot garden. The students are very proud of their accomplishment and said they are having trouble getting a chance to use the classroom due to the fact that it is always being used by a math, Latin, art or science class.
The ribbon cutting dedication of the Native Plant Outdoor Classroom was on Tuesday May 3rd. Students and club sponsors gave speeches, hugged and sat in awe of their achievement. The rain showed up at the end of the dedication but one can only smile as the garden, that was just a dream 8 months ago, got a refreshing drink of water. A round of applause goes out the all the students of the DHHS Environmental Club and all the DHHS students who volunteered their time and energy to create this Native Plant Outdoor Classroom. This project is another shining example of what a group of dedicated students and EcoAddendum can accomplish!
Perennial Planting Success!
70 volunteers bustled up and down the slope like a hive of busy worker bees. It was the perfect Spring afternoon to have a planting. In just under 2 hours 174 native plants were planted back into Georgia’s landscape in the DHHS Native Plant Outdoor Classroom. After years of planning and organizing, on the part of the DHHS Environmental Club, everyone left with satisfied grins from ear to ear. Special thanks to Lowe’s Tool Box for Education Grant, all the folks who bought plants in the DHHS plant sale and the DHHS Environmental Club Sponsors Mrs. Andrea Avery, Ms. Carrie Staines, and Ms. Aly Montooth for helping make this Native Plant Outdoor Classroom a possibility.

School Overview
The Druid Hills High School Environmental Club is in its fifth year, making it one of the newer clubs at the eighty-two-year-old public institution. Also known as “The Green Team,” the club is sponsored by Mrs. Andrea Avery, Ms. Carrie Staines, and Ms. Aly Montooth, who are all teachers at DHHS. This vibrant group of diverse students generates ideas for projects that positively benefit the environment and the school community. The Green Team raises money for Trees Atlanta, removes invasive species from Fernbank Forest, cleans creeks, plants trees, raises awareness about alternative modes of transportation, recycles the glass, plastic, and aluminum generated by the school, enters environmentally-based competitions, and so much more. Currently, the Green Team is seeking to beautify the campus and provide an inviting place for students to work outside by building an outdoor classroom, complete with foliage native to Georgia bordering the space, with the help of EcoAddendum. The club is also focusing on Fall Fest IV, a benefit concert featuring student-performed music, designed to raise funds for Trees Atlanta. No matter what the club’s activities, the students are the ones who create environmental change in the DHHS community and beyond; the sponsors are merely facilitators.
Vision
We will transform an eroded hillside into a natural outdoor classroom that will educate students in the theory and practice of environmental sustainability. We will also raise and sustain plants native to Georgia that benefit our school’s native pollinators, wildlife, and ecosystem.
